Twilight Grower's Meeting- August 17th
New Roots will be hosting a grower's tour and walk with UNH cooperative extension. The topic is "to be announced" but will be geared to farmers and market gardeners.
A Spring of extremes, although extreme has become the norm these days. A March that saw 26" inches of rain fall on our farm was followed by a beautiful April and a very warm May. We rebuilt our storm damaged greenhouses, put up a new sign, planted like crazy, started farmers' markets again, and, for the first time, made hay in May.
Perhaps the most gratifying part of the Spring was the early greenup that allowed us to get our flock of grass-fed Katahdin sheep and heritage breed piglets out onto pasture much earlier than normal. Although we make great hay, the livestock love the lush green grass and legumes.
We are settling into the rhythm of outdoor Farmers' Markets and CSA pickup, and we are continuing to expand our farm in a sustainable manner that allows us to maintain the quality that you have become used to from New Roots Farm. We have a dedicated crew of two Apprentices, a full-time employee and a lot of great volunteers. Together, we have significantly increased our veggie plantings, our pastured-pork operation, our lamb flock and we are just beginning the adventure of raising 1000 broiler chickens on pasture. The chickens will be following the sheep Joel Salatin style, helping to cleanup the ungrazed grass, keeping down the flies and increasing the fertility of the soil.
It's interesting as we move closer to closing the circle on the farm- the animal bedding from the winter is composted and fertilizes the veggie fields, the veggie fields are cover cropped, rested and then grazed by the animals who fertilize the soil and increase our yield the next time they are planted. It's not perfect, but we are excited to see the ongoing improvement in our soil, our forages, our animals and our veggies. See you at the markets!
