"In seed time learn, in harvest teach, in winter enjoy."    -William Blake

The first major storm of the season is upon us, and we haven't put the farm to bed yet.  November, normally my favorite month (much maligned by those who can't see the beauty in the muted russets of late fall under a gray sky), was a bit of a mechanical nightmare here at New Roots- two balky tractors, a shaky transmission in our market van, and a busted something or other in our work/plow truck. Sigh. There's a lot to say for frugality, but it seems our (very well) used equipment has conspired against us this year.  Here's hoping for a mechanically sound 2010.

Jojo!  Now it's time to sit down and enjoy the bounty of the year's work.  A freezer full of pasture-raised pork, lamb and chicken, along with a rootcellar topped with onions, potatoes, carrots, shallots, garlic and more, will insure a long winter of slow food.  One of the ironies of the summer is that we are so busy that it can be difficult to eat the way we would like to.  We hope to see you at the Winter Markets this year- hopefully we will all have the time to sit, connect with friends and family, and eat the way we'd like this season.  Time to add some more wood to the woodstove...

There's still much to be thankful for this as our fourth year on this land winds to a close. With the help of Johanna, Nina, Patrick, Molly, Eben, Jean, Ellen, Meg and many, many others, we were able to build a new greenhouse, erect a grain bin, complete our irrigation system, improve our field drainage, fix our road, finalize a new logo, improve our animal barn and finish lots of other ongoing projects- all while attending four markets a week and managing our CSA.  Thanks so much everyone! Our deepest thanks to Johanna L. who, as our first New Roots Apprentice, set an incredibly high standard for those that will follow.  You rock,

Getting the Garden Ready?  There's nothing like eating your own fresh veggies! New Roots Farm has the certified organic seedlings to get your garden off on the right foot. We have completed a new 1500 sq.ft. greenhouse dedicated to on-farm seedling sales.  We'll be opening in April for you earlybirds. Click here to download our 2009 tomato, pepper and eggplant list. Our 2010 list will be out soon. Many unique and interesting varieties selected for performance and flavor.  We also offer a wide variety of other seedlings ranging from beets to zuchini and everything in between!
